SHUTTER PROBLEMS

  • Inaccurate shutter speeds
  • Slow Speed Sticky
  • Gummy/congealed lubricants
  • Bulb & time don’t work
  • Shutter doesn’t operate in cold weather
  • Flash doesn’t work
  • Impact damage
  • Water damage
  • Significant wear and tear
  • Missing mounting flanges or retainer
  • Tampered and/or damaged by inexpert repair attempts.

SOME PROBLEMS ARE SIMPLE TO FIX

Most good looking, intact shutters with little visible wear are most practical to service.

A well maintained original shutter in for cleaning will have disassembly as needed to access the internal mechanism while leaving original factory settings un-disturbed. Dimensions are checked to ensure concentricity and proper lens centering. Iris and main blade operation are checked. Flash contacts are cleaned and the speeds governor cleaned and lubricated according to the original manufacturer’s specification. All functions, including press focus, Bulb and Time are checked and restored to good working order. Shutters are returned with a speed sheet.
Most shutter cla’s like this are $100.00

SOME PROBLEMS ARE MORE DIFFICULT

Shutters which have seen hard service often need more work. A badly worn or impact or otherwise damaged shutter must be more thoroughly disassembled, the parts carefully checked and replaced where appropriate and when available. Original settings must be checked and re-adjusted and checked on test instruments. Tired springs can be replaced, and entire sub-assemblies can be re-built or exchanged. This type of work can restore even some badly damaged classics to full working condition and appearance.
Shutters are returned with a speed sheet.

We can estimate the difficulty of repair if you contact me with a description of your problem.
PRICE CAN BE $125-150 AND UP

AND, THEN AGAIN, SOME ARE IMPOSSIBLE

Rarely, the condition of a shutter simply warrants its replacement. Water damage, impact damage, or just years and years of being “ridden hard and put away wet” can take an irrevocable toll. Replacement parts for older shutters are becoming more difficult to locate and sometimes shutters are BERed due to a lack of parts.

All shutters are subject to a $40.00 bench fee. This fee is waived if a CLA/Repair is performed or if the optics are remounted into a new shutter. If the shutter is determined to be beyond economical repair, BER, and no additional work is requested, the bench fee is still due.

CLA’s, clean lubricate and adjust, are guaranteed for 90 days from the date of return shipping. If the shutter fails within 90 days, it may be returned for additional repairs. Please contact us prior to shipping and include a copy of the original job invoice with the shutter. Return shipping is the customer’s responsibility.

If the shutter is returned and it is determined that negligence or abusive behavior is responsible for the equipments failure, this guarantee is null and void.

Please keep in mind shutters need to be exercised. Leaving a shutter unused for months or years on end allows for dust to settle, lubricants to gum up and moisture to collect. Our guarantee is for 90 days and we will not extend free or discounted cla’s for shutters that have been overhauled, sat for an extended period of time and are no longer operating correctly.
